Single-seater racing is also known as open-wheel racing. It is a form of motorsport and sees cars that are designed exclusively for high-speed racing. Unlike other competitions, single-seater racing does not cover wheels. Racing cars also have aerofoil wings, which assist in creating downforce and enhancing track adhesion. Formula One racing is a type of single-seater racing and has a World Championship for drivers and car-builders once a year. Each yearly competition has 18 races a year and features car manufacturers from brand name companies like Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Honda and Toyota.

The F1 Driver's Championship of Formula One racing is considered the highest achievement in racing competition, and is one of three world championships given annually.

In America, championship cars are similar to F1 cars, with more restrictions on technology as pertains to cost. There are also other series of single-seater racing including A1 Grand Prix, GP2, Formula Nippon and Formula 3. Kart racing is also considered a form of single-seater racing. Kart racing uses small and low cost machines on much smaller tracks. However, these humble beginnings are often part of the growing process for tomorrow's F1 drivers.

As recently as 2006, the world's first all-female racing team was assembled. They were featured on an MTV reality show pilot which was filmed at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Super league Formula racing is a new style of racing ready to debut in 2008 and will be open-wheel, single-stock car racing that takes place around Grand Prix tracks.
