Historic Honda F1 Cars

The Honda Racing F1 team started in 1963 a mere three years following the production of the company's first road car. Honda Racing F1 quickly made a reputation upon their arrival, which had long been dominated by European teams. Honda Racing F1 had an all Japanese factory team (not counting the drivers) and built their own engines and chassis, which had only been attempted by Ferrari and BRM. By the second year of competition, Honda F1 cars had reached the top of the podium with the RA272. 1966 saw a losing battle with the heavy RA273 chassis, while 1967 saw another Honda F1 winner in the RA300 driven by John Surtees. The Honda F1 team won the 1967 Italian Grand Prix. By 1969, the F1 Honda team had withdrew from the F1 season. Would Honda ever return to competition?

Honda Racing F1 – Into The New Age

Formula 1 Honda made a comeback in the 1980's but only as an engine supplier. It provided assistance to Spirit, Lotus, McLaren, Tyrrell and Williams. Even outside of active competition, Honda was still a major factor in the race. Their engines were paramount to Grand Prix victory and proved to be a reliable investment for other teams. Six constructor champions were proud to use Honda engines as well as five driver champions. The total number of Grand Prix events won by Honda engines was 71! It wasn't until 2005 when Honda Formula 1 started to become involved in competition again. Honda purchased the remaining stock of BAR to become the owner of the team and has since renamed it to Honda Formula 1 cars team for 2006 and on.
