F1 Racing

F1 racing is the highest level of auto racing competition in the world. It is governed by the FIA which ensures that the “formula” behind F1 racing is followed by all teams and drivers. The F1 racing championship season has a series of races known as the Grands Prix. There are also two world championships, one for drivers and the other for constructor teams. The term Formula One race indicates that this competition is the most competitive in terms of racing technology.

A History Of F1 Racing

F1 racing's early origins came from the European Grand Prix motor racing competition. These series of races took place in the early part of the 20th century. The actual “Formula One” racing style came into full view in 1946 right after World War II. Because of the war there were no championships held and races were actually suspended in many areas. However, by 1947 the World Drivers Championship was formally created. The first Formula 1 racing championship was held in Britain in the year 1950. Eight years later, a different F1 race championship was held for constructors. The 1950's era of F1 motor racing was dominated by teams that were run by road manufacturers. Back then the big names were Alfa Romeo, Mercedez Benz, Maserati and Ferrari. Of all the original Formula 1 racing game teams, only Ferrari still competes today.

From the 60's and onward to the 80's, there were many technological advancements that impacted the sports. By 1961 all competitors had switched from front engine to mid-engine cars for optimal performance. By 1962 aluminum sheet monocoque chassis designs replaced the space frame design of previous years and the sport was changed again. By the 1970's aerodynamic downforces were a major factor in car design.

The mid 80's to the new of the millennium saw much advancement in the way of business as opposed to technology, though improving technology has always been a factor. 1981 saw the first Concorde Agreement (exclusive contracts) while 1983 saw a ban on ground effect aerodynamics, and later a ban of turbocharged engines in 1989. Another significant point was the death of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger, who both died in 1994 as the result of road accidents. The FIA has worked to minimize the threat of Formula 1 racing dangers ever since, and no driver has died at the wheel of a track ever since. Formula one racing sponsors have also played a more important role in the sport in the modern age.
